Open Enrollment Period for Medicare Advantage and Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage
Open Enrollment period ran from October 15-December 7th. Open enrollment is now closed, but if anyone made a change during this open enrollment period, their new coverage will begin on January 1st, 2012.
If you’re in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can leave your plan and switch to original medicare during this period, you will have until February 14 to also join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to add drug coverage. Your coverage will begin in the first day of the month after the plan gets your enrollment form.
Note During this period, you cannot:
- Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan.
- Switch from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another
- Switch from one Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to another
- Join, switch, or drop a Medicare Medical Savings Account Plan
Note Between January 1st and February 14th:
- MAPD available – Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period
- MA plan enrollees have annual opportunity to prospectively disenroll from MA and retun to Original Medicare between January 1 and February 14 of every yearl. The effectice date of a disenrollment request made using the MADP will be the first of the month following receipt of the disenrollment request. A request made in January will be effective Frebruary 1, and a request made in February will be effective March 1.
- Regardless of whether the MA plan included Part D drug coverage, MA enrollees using the MADP to disenroll from MA from January 1 through February 14 are eligible for a SEP to enroll in a PDP and may request enrollment
